This story took place in late 2017 on New Year's Eve, when a woman expecting twins went into labor.
These babies were born a few minutes apart, but their birth certificates have different dates. Their mother, Maria Esperanza Florence Rios, went into labor on December 31 hours before New Year's Day and four weeks before the due date.
Maria was taken to the hospital and had an emergency C-section. Two minutes before midnight, she welcomed a baby boy, Joaquin, the last California resident to be born in 2017.
And 18 minutes later, at 00:16, his younger sister, Aitana de Jesus Ontiveros, was born, who became the first California baby in 2018.
Despite the premature birth, the twins are healthy and doing well. "I've been practicing for over 30 years, and I've never witnessed anything like this," the obstetrician attending the birth commented.
