Thanks to the great efforts of volunteers, this 7-month-old bear cub has been rescued from illegal market vendors. Now Sammy has a new home and a chance at a happy life in the future.

Sammy, a 7-month old bear cub, was being sold at an illegal wildlife market. Apparently, she got there after her mother was killed by poachers. "She would have probably ended up being sold for consumption or to waste her life away in a small cage while being kept as a pet," rescuers wrote on their web site. There are many illegal markets along the Lao-Vietnam border, which is where most wild animals from Southeast Asia are shipped to China.

But Sammy was lucky to be confiscated from the traffickers by the local authorities, who then turned to Lao Wildlife Protection Center (LWRC) for help. "The story of Sammy's rescue will probably remain in our annals as the most nerve-wracking and distressing of our ventures," LWRC later wrote.

"We are unsure about how long she had been kept at the market before she was confiscated," Michelle Walhout-Tanneau of LWRC says. "We assume it must have been at least several weeks. Physically she was in good shape, but her psyche has been severely affected as she was deeply stressed and afraid of people."

When LWRC staff picked Sammy up, they expected to bring her home in one day. Instead it took them four days to get through the typhoon and flood, carrying the caged bear with them.

"We drove for more than 58 hours while facing flooded streets, collapsed roads and landslides blocking the already harsh to travel routes through the mountains of Northern Lao," the rescue group said. "Fortunately, Sammy proved to be a patient passenger, exhausted from the conditions she previously had to endure she slept most of the drive."

Eventually, the rescue team did arrive at Sammy's new home.
