It's a fascinating institution that houses the elderly and kids under one roof. The little ones can thus communicate with seniors, learn interesting things from them, and always be in the center of adults' attention. The elderly also benefit from staying with the kids as they learn to enjoy their life again.
There are 400 seniors and dozens of little kids in this program. Five days a week toddlers visit the older generation. Together they play music, dance, draw, tell each other all kinds of stories, cook and do many other interesting things.
Kids can see what having many grandparents at once is like. Moreover, they learn to understand adults and the aging process. And the older generation feels appreciated and needed, as they are happy to share their experiences, memories, knowledge, and love with the youngsters.
Evan Briggs has even made a movie about aging in America, the focus of which is this unusual institution. The director admits that filming has opened his eyes to the importance of human communication. Seeing the reunion of different generations separated by a huge age gap was really a very touching experience.
The man draws his viewers' attention to how much our entire society is losing, leaving the elderly to live out their last days in complete loneliness and isolation.
The entire team can't help rejoicing at how much the senior members of the project have changed in the presence of kids. Without them, the elderly seem to be half asleep, they are inert and unsociable. But when children come to them to play music or draw, or to make sandwiches for the needy and homeless (in general to carry out the project planned for that day), then they seem to come back to life. You even wonder where the old folks get their energy from!
That's the kind of therapy that is very helpful for both parties. And when you see their happy faces, you realize that this really is one of the best ideas of the last century!
