One of the most remote and inaccessible (you can't get there by road) hotels in the world is located in Alaska. And it seems to be one of the most expensive, though it is just a small chalet in the middle of snowy cliffs.
Sheldon Chalet is located in Denali National Park and Preserve on a glacier called Ruth. The idea to build such a hotel came from the Alaska piloting legend Donald 'Don' Sheldon in the middle of the 20th century. Sheldon was one of the few pilots who could fly in such conditions. Moreover, he pioneered the technique of glacier landings.
The location of the chalet looks incredible. It's a ring of mountain peaks, also called the amphitheater, where it's almost impossible to land. However, there is a small rock in the center, which has a relatively flat surface. Don Sheldon took a fancy to it, because his plane could land only on this small platform.
There is no other access into the area. It is believed that going through these rocks on foot is almost unreal, especially for unprepared tourists who would like to have a break from the daily hustle and bustle.
But most interestingly, Don Sheldon did not just discover these places. He bought the rock near which he learned to land. The pilot managed to build there a tiny guest house, which did not qualify as an expensive hotel. This small cabin with one stove and four beds was known as Historic Mountain House.
After Don Sheldon had passed away, his children, Kate and Robert Sheldon, took over the inheritance and decided to build a real luxurious hotel there. In three years, from 2015 to 2018, a new premium chalet, featuring 5 bedrooms, accommodating up to 10 people at a time, was built. In 2018 the first guests began to arrive there.
Food delivery is one of the most expensive parts of the business, that is also why the chalet costs $35,000 for a 3-night stay.
