The homeless female pit bull, later named Rainbow, had never eager to interact with humans. Life on the streets had taught her to be wary and mistrustful, but one day something happened that the smart pet could not have foreseen. Two days after she welcomed her pups, a huge rain storm struck California. Rainbow hid the newborn puppies in the bushes, but the chances of the family surviving were slim. Though reluctantly, Rainbow had to trust the humans.

The locals knew Rainbow was a stray dag living in the neighborhood. They tried to feed her or take her to the shelter, but she always ran away. But when the thunderstorm struck, the doggie and her litter were immediately in danger.

Having arrived on an emergency call the rescue team could not figure out where she was hiding with her puppies. It was dark and raining heavily, so to locate them in such conditions was not an easy task.

Eventually, though, they found them all huddled up together deep in the bushes, Rainbow doing her best to keep her babies warm.

Now it was time to win Rainbow's trust. The pooch used to run away from people, but this time she couldn't abandon her pups. Will she defend, will she attack, will she have to be sedated? Fortunetely, a few treats solved the problem.

The rescuer carefully picked up the puppy and dragged it outside. Rainbow perked up her ears, startled, and... licked her baby's nose as if reassuring him everything would be all right. One by one people took all the puppies, and each received a goodbye kiss from the mother. The doggie stayed in the den and did not know where their pups were taken.

Rainbow made no resistance to being pulled out of the bushes and put in a cage. The rain was pouring down, so it was time to take Rainbow and her brood to a safe shelter. People, dogs, and equipment were dripping wet.

The results of the rescue operation were a lean, exhausted but healthy momma dog and eight adorable puppies. The pups were named after the elements: Thunder, Bolt, Raindrop, Misty, Flash, Stormy, and the two smallest were named Droplet and Breezy. Rainbow turned into the friendliest dog in the world, as if she tried to make up for all the days of her life without human care.

The puppies are growing up and will soon be ready to find new homes. Rainbow is no longer avoiding humans, and she doesn't object to her little ones getting their own families as well.
