Virginia and Catalina are the first albino twins to be born in Argentina. Albinism is a genetic disorder that causes a lack (or complete absence) of the pigment melanin. That's why albinos have light hair, skin, and eyes. Only one in 17,000 newborns has this rare disorder and twins are considered a unique case.

This truly miraculous event happened in Tucumán, northern Argentina. When Gomez Jorge Antonio, 42, and Romero Leila Judith, 39, found out they were expecting twins the future parents were over the moon. According to the mother and father of the girls, the twins were their blessing.

The babies were born at the 36th week of gestation, a little earlier than they were expected. Catalina was born two minutes ahead of Virginia.

When parents first saw the babies, there were overwhelmed with joy. The twin's unusual appearance didn't affect the couple's happiness since the babies were long-awaited and loved.

Of course, as the girls grow older, the father and mother face some challenges. Characteristic features of people with this genetic condition include vision problems and increased skin sensitivity to sunlight. So girls always wear sunscreen to protect their skin from exposure to the sun; they also need to wear glasses so that they don’t hurt their eyes.

"People’s wrong thinking is to believe that albinism is a disability, and that is why bullying exists and being afraid of them when they see them," Jorge said.
