A St. Louis resident has recently spotted a dog in the backyard of an abandoned house. The pooch was clearly a nursing mother as her nipples were swollen. So the locals realized that she must be hiding her pups somewhere. When they went to look around the garden, they saw the babies sitting in an old couch that must have been abandoned by the former owners of the house.

The Good Samaritan reported the canine family to Stray Rescue of St. Louis, and its chief lifesaving officer, Donna Lochmann, immediately set out to pick them up. When Lochmann arrived at the rescue scene, the mother dog started barking at her. The scared mama was desperately defending her babies, even though she was in great need of help herself. The woman managed to distract her with a can of food and lure her into her car.

Having searched for the pups all over the garden, Lochmann took the four puppies into the car.

Finally, the whole family was safe. They were taken to the shelter, examined, and then placed with a foster family. Photos of the puppies were posted on social media to find them owners. Fortunately, they didn't have to wait for a long time.

Now only the mother dog is looking for a forever home. When she realized that her little ones were in good hands, she turned from a scared doggie into a cheerful and kind pet. "She's completely just a happy, smiley, bouncy girl now who loves her caregivers and going on walks," Lochmann says.
