Baye Pigors, 27, often faces criticism. Many people think that with her looks and talents she could live somewhere in New York instead of hanging out with monkeys. The woman just laughs, because every day she wakes up happy to go to the monkey sanctuary she runs in Zimbabwe.

Several years ago, Pigors came across an orphaned baboon infant and took him in. She nursed him back to health and when the little guy grew up, it turned out there was nowhere to place him. He couldn't survive in the wild, but he didn't belong in an apartment either. So the woman set up the Free to be Wild sanctuary, a place where orphaned baboons, monkeys, and other primates could stay.

"Each rescue has its own unique story," Pigors says of her pets. "True, almost all of them had a hard start in life. We accept only orphans, found alone in early childhood with no survival skills in the wild."

Pigors teaches monkeys to swim, flee predators, and look for food. Every day she gets up at 5 a.m. and begins training sessions with the primates.

Some of the monkeys stay in the shelter forever, while others are released into the wild. Nevertheless, Pigors keeps an eye on them, since each monkey in her sanctuary gets a ring, by which it is very easy to recognize her animals.

By the way, in addition to baboons and monkeys, there are other animals at the Free to be Wild sanctuary such as lemurs, raccoons, and even an ostrich.
