About 800,000 years ago an enormous monster space rock collided with the Earth. The stroke of the 1.2-mile-wide meteorite was so intense that it affected over 10 percent of the planet's surface.

The map on the upper left shows how far tektites from an 800,000-year-old meteor spread. The main map shows the Bolaven volcanic field in Laos (circled in blue), the spot the meteorite hit.
